Composer and arranger Steve Sidwell took his career to new heights recently when he was commissioned to write and perform a composition for the opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. Steve explained that initial meetings with the architects showed they were keen to put across the cathedral-like atmosphere of the new building, giving each journey a sense of pilgrimage. Essentially a film set to music, the production represented a journey from train journey to check-in, through the airport shops to departure on the aircraft, in three movements.

The backing tracks for the piece were recorded at Angel Studios with Niall Acott engineering assisted by Mark Foster. Like Steve’s ‘Honda’ advert, the music was entirely vocal and was initially produced in the studio reproducing airport sounds using the choir. On the day, a 36-strong choir performed the piece conducted by Steve himself reinforced by the pre-recorded backing tracks.
